Utility Consumption Database

On March 2, 2017, a half-day training session was provided for all Utility Consumption Database (UCD) users.

The session focused on how to use the UCD as an energy management tool, including how to forecast a utility budget, analyzing energy costs, reviewing energy performance trends and performance benchmarking.

The original presentation from the training session has been revised based on feedback given to us by participants.

As a result, each topic now has a standalone slide deck with detailed step-by-step instructions for users.

The presentations are:

In addition we have included an Energy Budget Workbook (EXCEL 76KB). This Excel document is formulated to allow users to automatically calculate both their electricity and natural gas budgets based on previous consumption, changes to total facility floor area and estimated commodity and non-commodity prices.

To use this tool, users must enter the necessary values in:

Tab 1: Required Input Values

There are three sources of information that are required to complete this tab:

  • Data from the UCD
  • Information from your board’s Energy Advisor
  • Information from your board

Tab 2: Adjust for Facility Changes

The final calculation on this tab will appear in Tab 1 (Rows 35 and 36).

The tabs in the Workbook are linked so the electricity and natural gas budgets will be automatically calculated once Tabs 1 and 2 are completed.

  • The Workbook includes a Tab “Unit conversion”
    • this allows users to enter a value in one unit of measurement and convert it to a preferred unit of measurement. For example, consumption values in natural gas in ekWh can be converted to either m3 or GJ
  • Based on the users’ unit of preference, the natural gas budget will appear on either:
    • Tab 3a – Natural gas – m3
    • Tab 3b – Natural gas – GJ
  • To assist users, we have also provided a completed version of the Workbook in PDF that can be used as a reference
